This is another idea for the empty buildings by Sydenham Station that currently look like this:
But what if:
The vending machines etc would be working which would add a bit of interaction to a building that hasn’t interacted with the public for years. The backboard would be made of planks, hidden doors could be made if access to the building is needed. The type is signwritten on the wood except the sign at the top which would be individually cut letters.
It could easily be adapted to other sites, to different types of shops and be a lot of fun.

I love the idea, but I would worry that vandals would destroy all those cool items.
Hi Pam,
glad you like the idea. We did think about that vandals.
If you worried about any bit of public art getting vandalized nothing would ever get made (although in some cases that might be a good thing). It’s a case of limiting the possibility of something being damaged. We had other ideas for what could be put on the boards, the music shops could be a juke box. But we priced some Ukuleles and for about £20 so if it was broken it would be easy to replaced and we envisaged that some items over time could be changed to keep it fresh. The mirror would have polished stainless steel instead of glass so it wont get broken and the hand drier and condom machines manage to survive the worst excesses of gents toilets, and if they can survive that I’m sure they can survive Sydenham!
You have a very interesting blog by the way Pam!
Great to see you’re still updating this, Lee. On the back of it I keep meaning to take a few snaps around the town centre, creating something similar for my locale (crediting your good self in the process, of course).
Thanks David, we have another one coming soon. You may also like http://www.whatifpenge.wordpress.com which as a few fun ones on it. Thanks for your support! I think you should do it. We have been involved in a few of these schemes now all over London and it’s not as straight forward as you’d think! Getting really good, passionate signmakers that you get on well with is vitally important.
